City’s 58 Fire Deaths in ’12 Are Lowest on Record

There were 58 fire deaths in New York City in 2012, a record low that city officials attributed to faster response times, more intensive firefighter training, and extensive public contacts that included teaching schoolchildren what to do in a fire and distributing smoke detectors: more than 22,000 were handed out in 2012.
